L4971 1.5A Step-Down Switching Regulator (STMicroelectronics)

The L4971 (STMicroelectronics) is a monolithic step-down (buck) switching power regulator delivering up to 1.5A, with an internal power D-MOS transistor for high efficiency.

L4971 – How It Works

Its internal D-MOS switching transistor (typical RDS(on) of 0.25Ω) converts an input voltage of 8V-55V down to a regulated, adjustable output between 3.3V and 50V, with a precise internal 3.3V reference, pulse-by-pulse current limiting, hiccup-mode short-circuit protection, and soft-start — a complete step-down converter solution in one chip.

Compared to the fixed-output L4940 linear regulator also in this catalog, this switching regulator is far more efficient at higher input-output voltage differentials, at the cost of higher design complexity from the switching topology.
