The TOP246 (Power Integrations, TOPSwitch-GX family) is a fully integrated AC/DC switching converter chip — it combines a high-voltage power MOSFET with PWM control and fault protection on a single CMOS die, rated for roughly 90W at 85–265VAC universal input.

TOP246 – How It Works

Mains AC is rectified externally to raw DC, then the chip’s internal MOSFET switches at high frequency through a transformer; the built-in PWM controller adjusts switching to regulate the output voltage, while integrated protection features (overload, over-temperature, over-voltage) shut it down safely under fault conditions.

Because it packs the switching MOSFET, controller, and protection circuitry all in one part, repairing a TOPSwitch-based SMPS is usually as simple as replacing this single chip rather than several discrete components.
