The LM324 is one of the most widely used op-amp ICs in the world — a quad (4-in-1) operational amplifier that runs from a single supply voltage instead of needing a dual positive/negative rail.

LM324 – How It Works

Because its inputs and output can swing down to (or near) ground with only a single positive supply, it’s much easier to use in simple 5V or 12V microcontroller/battery-powered circuits than classic dual-supply op-amps like the 741 — a major reason for its enduring popularity.

It’s one of the first chips recommended to beginners building sensor interface circuits precisely because it works comfortably off the same 5V rail as an Arduino or similar board, with no extra negative supply needed.
