The LA3210 is a Sanyo-series equalizer amplifier IC with built-in ALC (automatic level control), used in tape/cassette playback circuits to shape frequency response and stabilize output level.

LA3210 – How It Works

It applies frequency-dependent gain (the “equalization” needed to correct for tape playback response) while the ALC circuit automatically reduces gain if the signal gets too strong, preventing distortion from wildly varying tape signal levels.

The built-in ALC is what distinguishes it from a plain equalizer amplifier — a cassette deck exhibiting distorted or wildly fluctuating playback volume is a common symptom pointing to this chip.
