The 74138 (SMD package) is a high-speed 3-to-8 line decoder/demultiplexer — functionally identical to the through-hole DIP version, just in a surface-mount package for compact PCB assembly.
74138 – How It Works
A 3-bit binary address selects exactly one of eight active-low outputs, gated by three enable inputs (two active-low, one active-high) that must all be satisfied simultaneously — the same logic behavior as the DIP version, just packaged differently for automated SMD assembly.
Choose this SMD variant over the through-hole DIP version when a design is being built for automated pick-and-place assembly or simply needs the smaller physical footprint on a compact PCB.
