The ICL7109 (Intersil) is a 12-bit microprocessor-compatible analog-to-digital converter, using the dual-slope integrating conversion technique for high-accuracy, low-power CMOS conversion.

ICL7109 – How It Works

Its 12-bit binary output (plus polarity and over-range indication) is organized as byte-wide, TTL-compatible three-state outputs directly accessible via byte-enable and chip-select control lines for a straightforward parallel bus interface, and it also includes a UART handshake mode allowing it to communicate with standard serial UARTs.

Compared to the serial-interface ADC0838 also in this catalog, its 12-bit resolution and parallel/UART interface options make it better suited to precision measurement applications like digital multimeters and panel instruments.
