SN74540 Octal Inverting Buffer/Line Driver (3-State)

The SN74540 is an octal 3-state inverting buffer/line driver — functionally similar to the 74240 (also in this catalog) but with a different pin layout better suited to certain bus-oriented board designs.

74540 – How It Works

Its inputs and outputs are arranged on opposite sides of the package (rather than interleaved like the 74240), which simplifies PCB trace routing in bus-buffering applications where signals flow cleanly from one side of the board to the other.

The choice between this and the 74240 usually comes down to PCB layout convenience rather than any electrical performance difference between the two.
