74145 BCD-to-Decimal Decoder/Driver (Open-Collector)

The 74145 is a BCD-to-decimal decoder/driver IC with open-collector outputs, converting a 4-bit BCD input into an active-low signal on one of ten decimal output lines.

74145 – How It Works

Its open-collector outputs can sink significant current (typically up to 80mA), letting it directly drive relays, indicator lamps, or other higher-current loads corresponding to each decimal digit 0-9, rather than just driving standard logic-level loads like a typical decoder chip.

Its unusually high-current open-collector outputs make it a good choice specifically when a decoded output must drive something heavier than standard logic, such as directly energizing a relay coil for each digit.
