74138 – How It Works

The three enable inputs (two active-low, one active-high) must all be satisfied simultaneously for any output to activate — this makes it straightforward to cascade multiple 74138 chips together for address decoding across a larger memory map.

This chip is a staple in classic microprocessor systems (like the Z80 and 6502) for splitting memory and I/O space between RAM, ROM, and peripheral chips using just the CPU’s upper address lines.
