SN74590 8-Bit Binary Counter with Output Register

The SN74590 is an 8-bit binary counter combined with a separate output storage register and 3-state outputs — the count value and the value visible on the outputs can be updated independently.

74590 – How It Works

Because the counter and the output register have separate clock inputs, the counter can keep counting internally while the output register holds a previously latched value — letting external logic read a stable snapshot without interrupting the ongoing count.

This separate-register design is exactly what a frequency counter needs — it lets the display update on a fixed schedule (e.g. once per second) while the internal count keeps running continuously in the background.
