The TA8710 is a Toshiba sound-IF (SIF) converter IC used in television and VTR (video tape recorder) equipment to process the sound carrier extracted from the composite video/audio signal.

TA8710 – How It Works

It converts the intercarrier sound-IF signal down to a usable audio frequency, separating the sound channel from the composite broadcast signal so it can be amplified and sent to the speaker — a standard stage in analog TV and VTR audio processing chains.

It sits downstream of the video/vision IF stage in the signal chain, so a “no sound but picture OK” fault on classic TV/VTR gear is a common symptom pointing to this chip or its immediate support components.
