KA3842B Current-Mode PWM SMPS Controller

The KA3842B is a current-mode PWM controller IC, part of the widely-used UC3842/KA3842 family, used to build switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) with excellent load and line regulation.

KA3842B – How It Works

Unlike voltage-mode control, it directly senses the inductor/transformer current on a cycle-by-cycle basis, giving faster response to load changes and inherent protection against transformer saturation — a key reason current-mode controllers like this became the industry standard for many SMPS designs.

It’s one of the most commonly replaced chips in dead SMPS repair work, since the UC3842/KA3842 family has been used across an enormous range of chargers, monitors, and small appliance power supplies for decades.
