The 74125 is a tri-state quad bus buffer IC — four independent buffer gates, each with its own active-low output-enable control that lets the output be switched to a high-impedance (disconnected) state.

74125 – How It Works

Unlike a simple non-inverting buffer (like the 7434 also in this catalog), each of its four buffers can be independently disabled to a high-impedance state, allowing multiple devices to share the same bus line and take turns driving it without electrical conflict — a foundational component for bus-oriented microprocessor system designs.

It performs a similar tri-state buffering role as the 74F125 also in this catalog, but in the standard-speed 74-series rather than the higher-speed FAST TTL family — pick whichever speed grade a given design’s timing actually requires.
