SN74690 Synchronous 4-Bit Up/Down Counter with Register

The SN74690 combines a synchronous 4-bit up/down counter with an internal storage register and 3-state multiplexed outputs, part of the SN74LS690-699 family of counter/register/multiplexer chips.

74690 – How It Works

It lets the outputs display either the live counter value or a separately-loaded register value (selectable via a multiplexer control pin), giving a single chip the combined functionality that would otherwise need a counter, a register, and a multiplexer as three separate parts.

It belongs to a family of very similar part numbers (690 through 699) that differ in small details like polarity or preset behavior, so always confirm the exact suffix before substituting.
