The Raspberry Pi Pico W takes the exact same RP2040 microcontroller as the original Pico and adds 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN plus Bluetooth 5.2, with an onboard antenna and modular compliance certification, so the wireless module can be used in a commercial product without separate radio certification.

Underneath the added radio, the specs match the original Pico exactly: dual-core Cortex-M0+ up to 133MHz, 264KB SRAM, 2MB flash and the same 8 PIO state machines for custom hardware protocols. This means any code written for the plain Pico runs unmodified on the Pico W, and the only real decision when choosing between them is whether the project needs networking. The RP2040’s 40nm process keeps power draw low even with the radio active, which matters for anything running on battery.
