The Raspberry Pi Pico is Raspberry Pi’s own microcontroller board, built around the RP2040 chip they designed in-house rather than a Linux-capable SoC — it’s aimed squarely at Arduino-style embedded projects, not at running an operating system.

The RP2040 packs a dual-core ARM Cortex-M0+ with a flexible clock up to 133MHz, 264KB of SRAM and 2MB of onboard flash, manufactured on a modern 40nm process for low power draw. Its standout feature is Programmable I/O (PIO): eight state machines that can be programmed to implement custom protocols in hardware — think of it as generating precise signal timing that would otherwise require bit-banging on the CPU. Standard peripherals include I2C, SPI, and USB 1.1 with device and host support, and the board has no built-in WiFi or Bluetooth radio.
