The UNI-T UT685B TDR Cable Tester is a handheld Time-Domain Reflectometer built for diagnosing copper cabling, covering CAT5E, CAT6, CAT6A and CAT8 twisted-pair lines as well as coaxial runs. It reports wiring faults, split pairs and cable length on a 2.8-inch backlit graphical LCD, with a listed test range of 500m.

UNI-T UT685B TDR Cable Tester – How It Works

Because the tester uses TDR technology, it sends a signal pulse down the cable and reads the reflection to pinpoint opens, shorts and split pairs without blind spots. As a result, technicians can estimate fault distance directly on-screen instead of testing blindly section by section. When paired with the included UT683R receiver, it also adds optical and audio guidance, so locating a specific cable run inside a bundled installation becomes straightforward.

In addition to fault finding, the UT685B automatically senses whether a cable carries Power over Ethernet and identifies the exact standard — 802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt. Therefore, network installers can confirm PoE compliance on the same pass as a standard continuity check, saving a second trip with a separate PoE tester.
