Measuring Noise Levels

Mount the meter on a tripod or hold it at arm’s length away from your body, because a person standing close to the microphone reflects sound and raises the reading. Fit the windscreen outdoors even on a calm day, since wind noise across the microphone adds low-frequency energy that has nothing to do with the source being measured.

Select the weighting and response time appropriate to what is being assessed, as A-weighting with slow response is standard for most environmental and workplace noise work. Note the ambient background level separately, because a source measurement is only meaningful when it sits clearly above the background.
