The 5-Channel Line Sensor Module extends the same TCRT5000 infrared reflectance approach as the 3-channel version across a wider array, giving a line-following robot finer resolution about exactly where the line sits under it rather than a coarse left/center/right estimate.

5-Channel Line Sensor – How It Works

With five independent sensing points spread across the array, a robot’s steering algorithm can compute a weighted average line position — giving proportional steering correction rather than the simple on/off left-or-right logic a 3-channel array is limited to, which produces noticeably smoother line-following at speed. Each channel still has its own sensitivity potentiometer, so the wider array does add more individual calibration points to tune compared to a 3-channel board, though the payoff is a much smoother, more competition-grade following behavior. Like all TCRT5000-based sensors, detection works only at short range (roughly 1-25mm), so mounting height above the floor matters for consistent readings.
