IS0203 Laser Sensor – How It Works

The sensor is tuned to respond to near-infrared light around 900nm as well as focused visible laser light (commonly a 650nm red laser diode), and it outputs a logic-level HIGH or LOW signal depending on whether the beam is currently striking the sensor, making it directly compatible with any 5V microcontroller’s digital input pin. Because it responds to a focused beam rather than general ambient light, it works best paired with a dedicated laser transmitter and, optionally, a reflective target across the gap being monitored, rather than relying on stray room light. It is intended for indoor, short-range, controlled-lighting use, similar in behavior to the widely used KY-008-compatible laser receiver modules found in beginner electronics kits.
