GY-31 TCS3200 Color Sensor Module

The GY-31 TCS3200 Color Sensor Module converts light color into a frequency signal rather than a simple analog voltage, using an 8×8 array of photodiodes individually filtered for red, green, blue, or left completely clear for overall brightness.

TCS3200 – How It Works

Selecting which photodiode filter group is active (via two control pins) and reading the resulting square-wave output frequency on a microcontroller’s pin lets software sample red, green, and blue channel intensities in sequence, then combine them into an RGB color estimate. A programmable frequency scaling option adjusts the output range for easier reading by a microcontroller, and a controllable white LED illuminates the target, which matters a lot for consistent readings since ambient lighting otherwise skews the color measurement significantly. Best detection distance is very short, around 1cm, so the sensor needs to sit close to whatever surface it’s reading rather than working like a general ambient light sensor at a distance.

Because ambient light strongly affects readings at this close range, shielding the sensor from external light or relying on its own onboard LED for consistent illumination improves color-detection accuracy considerably in practice, especially outdoors in daylight.

Because the sensor outputs a frequency rather than a direct RGB value, some calibration against known reference colors is usually needed before absolute color matching becomes genuinely reliable.
