MQ135 Gas Sensor Module

The MQ135 air quality sensor uses a heated tin-dioxide (SnO2) sensing element whose resistance changes when target gas molecules adsorb onto its surface, the same basic sensing principle shared across the whole MQ-series family.

MQ135 – How It Works

It’s most sensitive to NH3, NOx, alcohol, benzene, smoke and CO2-equivalent gases, though like all MQ sensors it responds to more than one gas type and does not identify which specific gas triggered a reading. The module outputs both a digital (DO) threshold signal, adjustable via an onboard potentiometer, and a raw analog (AO) voltage for more precise concentration estimation in software. Every MQ sensor ships uncalibrated from the factory and needs a 24+ hour burn-in period powered continuously in clean air before its baseline resistance (R0) stabilizes enough for reliable readings. Because MQ135 targets the broad mix of gases associated with general indoor air quality rather than one specific pollutant, it’s the standard choice for DIY air-quality index projects.
