DHT22 Temperature Humidity Sensor

The DHT22 Temperature Humidity Sensor is the more capable sibling of the DHT11, sharing the same single-wire digital protocol but with a substantially wider measurement range and tighter accuracy, at the cost of a slower 0.5Hz sampling rate.

DHT22 – How It Works

It measures 0-100% relative humidity at ±2-5% accuracy and a much wider -40°C to +80°C temperature range at ±0.5°C, compared to the DHT11’s 0-50°C at ±2°C. Because it updates only once every two seconds rather than every second, it’s better suited to slower-changing environmental monitoring than to anything needing rapid response. The internal chip still handles all signal conditioning and calibration, so the digital output is ready to use directly without an external ADC or calibration curve.

Specifications are sourced from the official DHT22 datasheet. Because it shares the DHT11’s wiring and library, upgrading an existing project usually just means swapping the sensor and adjusting the library’s sensor-type flag, without rewiring anything else on the breadboard.

Because the DHT22 responds more slowly than the DHT11, code that polls it every second instead of every two seconds will simply get repeated stale readings back rather than any outright error.

The wider temperature floor also makes it a better fit for freezer or cold-storage monitoring, where a DHT11’s 0°C lower limit would simply stop reporting usable numbers below freezing.
