LA2000 Audio Level Sensor IC — Tape Blank-Space Detector

The LA2000 audio level sensor IC is a Sanyo SIP-9 package chip designed to detect blank (silent) sections on magnetic tape, so radio-cassette recorders, cassette decks, and car stereos can automatically find the start or end of a music program.

How It Works

The LA2000 continuously monitors the audio signal level coming off the tape head. When it detects a gap — a period with no audio content, marking the space between tracks or the end of a recording — it triggers its output stage. This output includes transistors rated to drive mechanical plungers or solenoids with up to 600 mA, plus a protective diode to absorb the reverse-voltage spike these inductive loads generate when switched off. External resistor/capacitor networks let the designer set how long a gap must last before the chip reacts, and an internal comparator with built-in hysteresis keeps the detection stable even as the supply voltage fluctuates.
