DHT11 Humidity & Temperature Sensor

The DHT11 humidity temperature sensor combines a capacitive humidity element and a thermistor behind one chip that does the analog-to-digital conversion internally, so a microcontroller reads finished temperature and humidity values over a single data pin instead of two separate analog signals.

DHT11 – How It Works

Because the conversion happens on-chip, the DHT11 outputs a calibrated digital signal rather than a raw voltage that needs its own calibration curve, which is why it remains one of the most beginner-friendly environmental sensors despite its modest accuracy. It measures 20-80% relative humidity at ±5% accuracy and 0-50°C at ±2°C, updating once per second (1Hz). Its narrower range and lower precision compared to the DHT22 is a real trade-off for a lower price, not a manufacturing defect, and is fine for indoor room-monitoring projects that don’t need scientific-grade accuracy.

Because the DHT11 needs a pull-up resistor on its data line and strict timing on the read routine, most beginners find it easier to start with a tested library rather than bit-banging the timing-sensitive protocol from scratch on their own.

Placing the sensor away from direct heat sources like a power resistor or a nearby motor also matters, since the DHT11 reads ambient air rather than the temperature of whatever object it happens to be mounted near.
