ZMPT101B – How It Works

The onboard voltage transformer steps mains voltage down proportionally while providing over 1kV of galvanic isolation between the primary (mains) and secondary (sensing) sides, and an LM358 op-amp circuit then conditions that scaled-down signal into a clean analog output centered around the microcontroller’s mid-supply voltage. Rated accuracy is around ±3%, sufficient for monitoring and logging rather than certified metering, and it operates across the standard 45-65Hz mains frequency range found worldwide. Because true RMS voltage calculation from the raw waveform needs sampling many points per cycle and running the math in software, most Arduino libraries for this sensor include the RMS calculation code rather than expecting a direct voltage reading straight off the analog pin.
