A4988 Stepper Motor Driver (2A)

The A4988 Stepper Motor Driver is a complete microstepping driver with a built-in translator, meaning a microcontroller only needs to send step and direction pulses rather than sequencing the four motor coil phases directly by hand.

A4988 – How It Works

It drives bipolar stepper motors between 8V and 35V logic supply at up to 2A per phase with a heatsink attached (1A without one), and supports full, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth microstepping, so a standard 200-step-per-revolution motor can be driven at up to 3200 microsteps per revolution for smoother motion and quieter operation. An onboard potentiometer sets the maximum current limit, which needs tuning to match the specific motor’s rated current rather than left at a default value, since running a low-current motor at full driver output can overheat and damage it. Built-in protections include thermal shutdown, under-voltage lockout, and short-circuit/crossover-current protection, which is why these boards can survive plenty of hobbyist wiring mistakes that would otherwise destroy a bare driver chip.
