The Mini Vibration Motor is a tiny vibration motor that produces a buzzing haptic sensation on 3V, the same type of motor found inside a phone’s vibrate function or a game controller’s rumble feature.

Mini Vibration Motor – How It Works

Inside the motor, a small offset (eccentric) weight is mounted on the motor’s spinning shaft rather than a centered one, so as the shaft spins, the weight’s off-center mass creates a wobbling, unbalanced rotation that shakes the entire motor body, producing the buzzing vibration felt when it’s held or attached to something. Because the vibration intensity scales with rotation speed, the motor can be driven at partial voltage through a transistor and PWM signal for adjustable-intensity haptic feedback, not just a simple full-on/full-off buzz. Its small size and low current draw make it easy to embed inside a wearable, a small enclosure or a handheld device without adding meaningful bulk or weight, and it responds within milliseconds of power being applied, quick enough for real-time notification or feedback use.

Because the motor draws a noticeable current spike at startup relative to its small size, drive it through a transistor rather than directly from a microcontroller GPIO pin to avoid exceeding the pin’s current rating. A flyback diode across the motor’s terminals is good practice too, since the small DC motor inside briefly generates a reverse voltage spike each time it’s switched off, which can otherwise stress the driving transistor over many cycles.
