L298N Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver

The L298N Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver is one of the most common motor driver boards in hobby electronics, built around ST’s L298N chip, which contains two full H-bridge circuits capable of independently controlling the direction and speed of two DC motors, or combined to drive a single 4-wire bipolar stepper motor.

L298N – How It Works

Each H-bridge takes a pair of direction control inputs plus a PWM-capable enable pin, letting a microcontroller both reverse a motor’s direction and control its speed by varying the PWM duty cycle on the enable line. It handles up to 2A continuous current per channel (up to 3A peak) across a wide 5-35V motor supply range, with an onboard 5V regulator that can power the logic side directly from the motor supply when it’s above 7V, saving a separate logic power source in most builds. Because the L298N is a linear bipolar driver rather than a MOSFET-based design, it drops a few volts across itself under load and runs noticeably warmer than more modern driver ICs, so a small heatsink is standard equipment on these boards rather than optional.
