28BYJ-48 – How It Works

Each coil draws up to 160mA when active, well within what the companion ULN2003 driver board’s Darlington transistor array can switch, and that driver board is what actually receives simple digital signals from a microcontroller and energizes the coils in the correct sequence, since the motor itself cannot be driven directly from a microcontroller’s low-current GPIO pins. Running in half-step mode (alternating single- and dual-coil energization) roughly doubles the step resolution and produces noticeably smoother motion compared to full-step mode, at the cost of needing more step commands to complete the same rotation.
