The NE555 Timer Module mounts the classic NE555 timer IC — one of the most widely produced chips in electronics history — on a breakout board with onboard adjustment trimmers, turning a chip that traditionally needs external resistors and capacitors calculated by hand into something tunable with a screwdriver.

NE555 Module – How It Works

In monostable mode the chip produces a single, precisely-timed pulse when triggered, useful for generating a fixed delay; in astable mode it oscillates continuously, generating a repeating square wave whose frequency and duty cycle can be adjusted independently through the module’s two trimmer potentiometers. Module implementations typically usefully cover roughly 1Hz to 500kHz before the underlying 555 architecture becomes unstable at very high frequencies, and the chip itself can sink or source up to 200mA directly, enough to drive a small buzzer, LED or relay coil without an additional transistor stage. Because the design dates back decades and is extremely well documented, countless reference circuits and calculators exist online for translating a desired frequency or delay time into the right resistor/capacitor combination.
