The HC-SR505 Mini PIR Motion Sensor is a compact, lower-power alternative to the more common HC-SR501, shrinking the PCB down to just 10 x 23mm while dropping standby current to under 60μA, which specifically targets battery-powered projects where the larger HC-SR501’s power draw is a real concern.

HC-SR505 – How It Works

Like any PIR sensor, it detects the infrared radiation a warm body emits as it moves through its roughly 100-degree field of view, switching its output HIGH (3.3V) when motion is detected within its 3-4 meter range and back LOW when the area returns to still. Unlike the HC-SR501, this smaller module has no external sensitivity or delay-time adjustment potentiometers — its 8-second (±30%) trigger delay is fixed at the factory, which trades tunability for the smaller footprint and lower power draw. Its default repeatable-trigger mode means the output stays HIGH continuously as long as motion keeps being detected, rather than needing to reset the timer manually.
