How It Works

The TIP150 transistor packs unusually high voltage tolerance (300V) into a Darlington pair, alongside 7A current handling — a combination not common in general-purpose Darlingtons, which are usually optimized for either high current or high voltage but not both together. This voltage headroom is exactly what automotive ignition systems need, since ignition coils generate large voltage spikes when switched, and the Darlington configuration still lets a small base current control the substantial coil current.
