BT136 triac

The BT136 triac is a 4A, 600V triac in a TO-220 package for bidirectional AC switching, commonly used in light dimmers, motor speed control, and general AC power regulation.

How It Works

A triac like the BT136 triac is essentially two thyristors connected back-to-back, letting it conduct current in both directions once triggered — unlike a diode or single thyristor, which only pass current one way. A small gate current (below 50mA at under 2V) is enough to trigger the triac into full conduction, after which it stays on until the AC current naturally crosses zero. By triggering at different points within each AC half-cycle, circuits can control how much of each cycle reaches the load — the principle behind dimmer switches and speed controllers.
