How It Works

The BF458 transistor is built to handle a high 250V collector-base and collector-emitter voltage while only carrying a modest 100mA current — a profile aimed at circuits that swing large voltages with relatively light current draw. This exact combination is what a CRT TV’s video output amplifier needs: it must drive the picture tube’s cathode with a signal swinging up to hundreds of volts, and the BF458 was specifically positioned for that role, as well as for class A output and driver stages in horizontal deflection circuits.
