ACS712 20A Current Sensor Module

The ACS712 20A Current Sensor Module measures current without breaking the measured circuit’s own voltage isolation, using Hall-effect sensing to detect the magnetic field a current-carrying conductor produces rather than inserting a shunt resistor directly in the load path.

ACS712 20A – How It Works

The 20A variant outputs 100mV per amp of measured current, centered on a resting 2.5V output (Vcc/2) when no current flows — so 10A reads roughly 3.5V and -10A reads roughly 1.5V, letting the module read both AC and DC current including its direction. Up to 3000V RMS of galvanic isolation between the current-carrying path and the sensing circuitry protects the microcontroller side from the potentially higher-voltage circuit being measured. Because it outputs a simple analog voltage, no special library is needed — a standard analogRead() combined with the sensor’s known mV/A scaling is enough to calculate current.

Because the 5A, 20A and 30A variants share the same chip with different internal sensitivity, always confirm which specific measurement range a listing covers before wiring it into a project already expecting one particular fixed mV/A scaling factor written into its code.

Because the sensor reads current rather than voltage, it must be wired in series with the load itself, not across it in parallel the way a standard voltmeter would normally be connected instead.
