The Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor V1.2 avoids the biggest weakness of cheaper resistive soil probes: because it senses moisture through capacitance rather than passing current directly through the soil and its own exposed electrodes, there’s no ongoing electrolytic corrosion to wear the sensor out over time.

Capacitive Soil Sensor – How It Works

The sensor’s exposed section acts as one plate of a capacitor, with the surrounding soil’s moisture content changing the effective capacitance the onboard circuit measures; that measurement converts to an analog output voltage between roughly 1.2V and 3.0V, higher moisture producing a different reading than dry soil. Its electrodes carry a protective anti-corrosion coating specifically to extend service life in constantly damp soil, giving a rated minimum lifespan of around 3 years compared to the months a bare resistive probe often lasts before corroding. An onboard voltage regulator lets it accept 3.3-5.5V input directly from either 3.3V or 5V microcontroller boards.
