L293 Motor Driver Shield

The L293D Motor Driver Shield is a stack-on Arduino shield built around the L293D quadruple half-H driver chip, giving direct control over up to four DC motors or two stepper motors without any separate wiring to a breadboard.

L293D Shield – How It Works

Because the L293D packs four independent half-H driver channels rather than the L298’s two full bridges, the shield can pair channels to drive up to four separate DC motors independently, or combine pairs of channels to drive two stepper motors, all from the same board. As a shield, it plugs directly onto an Arduino Uno’s header pins, taking over the pins it needs internally for motor control while still breaking out the remaining pins for sensors and other peripherals, avoiding the loose jumper wires a standalone driver module would need. Each channel handles up to 600mA continuously (a lower current ceiling than the L298N, since the L293D targets smaller motors), running motors from a separate 4.5-36V supply screw-terminal input kept isolated from the Arduino’s own 5V logic rail.

Because the L293D’s 600mA per-channel rating is lower than the L298N’s 2A, confirm total motor current stays within this limit before choosing this shield over a standalone L298N module for higher-current motors. Because it occupies the Arduino Uno’s header pins directly, double-check pin conflicts before stacking another shield on top, since several motor-control pins are fixed by the shield’s design and cannot be remapped in software.
