The Reed Switch Module 3 Pins is a magnetic proximity sensor board built around a sealed reed switch, giving a simple digital output whenever a magnet comes within detection range of the glass-enclosed contacts.

Reed Switch Module – How It Works

Inside the small glass envelope, two ferromagnetic reed contacts stay open (normally-open, SPST) until a magnetic field from a nearby magnet pulls them together, closing the circuit; moving the magnet away lets them spring back open. The module wraps this raw switch with a simple comparator and pull-up circuit on its 3-pin interface (VCC, GND, and digital output), so a microcontroller reads a clean HIGH when no magnet is present and LOW when one is close enough to trigger the switch, with a typical detection range around 1.5cm depending on magnet strength. Because reed switches are purely mechanical and contain no semiconductor to fail from ESD or voltage spikes, they are a very reliable, low-power way to detect door/window position, count rotations, or sense the presence of a magnetic object.
