The 125kHz RFID ID Tag is a credit-card-sized passive identification tag built around the EM4100 chip, giving each card a permanent, factory-programmed unique ID number that a compatible 125kHz reader can pick up wirelessly.

125kHz RFID Tag – How It Works

The tag contains no battery; instead, the electromagnetic field generated by a nearby 125kHz RFID reader powers the embedded EM4100 chip just long enough for it to transmit its stored 64-bit unique ID back to the reader, typically from a distance of 2-6cm. Because the ID is burned in at manufacturing and the chip is strictly read-only, the tag can never be reprogrammed or cloned to a different ID through normal use, which makes this exact card type well suited to access control and identification systems where a fixed ID per card is exactly what’s wanted. Each card ships in a standard ISO card format (85.6 x 54mm, credit-card sized) with its unique ID also printed on the surface for manual reference, and works with the widely available EM4100/EM4102-compatible reader modules used in classic RFID door-access and attendance projects.

Because this is a read-only card, always confirm a project needs fixed, permanent IDs rather than rewritable tags before ordering, since a rewritable RFID card (like an EM4305 or Mifare) is a different, incompatible chip family. Keeping the card flat and free of deep scratches across its printed surface helps preserve the embedded antenna coil, which runs around the card’s edge just beneath the plastic laminate and can be damaged by repeated bending.
