LCD Character 4×20 Display

The LCD Character 4×20 Display is a classic alphanumeric LCD module that shows four rows of twenty characters each, giving Arduino and similar microcontroller projects far more on-screen text real estate than the common 2-line 16-character display.

LCD 4×20 – How It Works

Built around the industry-standard HD44780 controller, the display renders each character from a built-in 5×8 dot-matrix font stored in its own character ROM, so a microcontroller just sends ASCII character codes over the parallel bus rather than drawing individual pixels itself. It communicates over the standard 4-bit or 8-bit HD44780 parallel interface, and a small onboard contrast potentiometer lets the visible character darkness be tuned to the viewing angle and lighting of the final installation. Because the interface uses several digital pins in its native parallel mode, many builders add a low-cost I2C backpack adapter to the same display, cutting the wiring down from around 6 pins to just 4 (power, ground, SDA, SCL) with no change to how the display itself works.
