OV7670 Camera Module (VGA)

The OV7670 Camera Module is a low-cost 0.3-megapixel CMOS camera sensor that handles image signal processing — exposure control, white balance, gamma correction and color saturation — entirely on-chip, so a connected microcontroller receives already-processed image data rather than needing to run that processing itself.

OV7670 – How It Works

It captures up to 640×480 (VGA) resolution at up to 30fps, outputting data in several selectable 8-bit formats (YUV/YCbCr 4:2:2, RGB565/555/444, or raw RGB) over a parallel DVP interface alongside an SCCB (I2C-compatible) control bus used to configure the sensor’s settings. Because it outputs a raw parallel video stream rather than a compressed format like JPEG, a microcontroller reading it needs enough RAM and processing headroom to buffer and handle frame data, which is why this sensor pairs well with more capable boards (like an STM32 or a suitably configured ESP32) rather than a basic 8-bit Arduino with limited memory. It runs on a single 3.3V supply and achieves roughly 46dB signal-to-noise ratio.

Specifications are sourced from the official OV7670 camera module datasheet. Because it needs a capable host to buffer raw parallel video data, pair it with a board that has enough RAM and I/O pins rather than a memory-limited 8-bit Arduino Uno board.

Because the sensor exposes so many pins for the parallel data bus alone, breadboard wiring gets crowded quickly, so a dedicated shield or carefully planned header layout saves real frustration.
