TDA2591 Line Oscillator IC — Horizontal Oscillator for CRT TVs

The TDA2591 line oscillator IC is a line (horizontal) oscillator combination chip originally manufactured by Plessey Semiconductors for analog color and monochrome CRT television receivers. It generates and stabilizes the horizontal sync pulse that drives the line output (flyback) stage, keeping the picture locked and free of horizontal jitter.

How It Works

Inside the TDA2591, an internal oscillator is locked to the incoming horizontal sync pulses extracted from the video signal by the sync separator stage. The chip compares the oscillator phase to the sync pulses and corrects timing drift, then outputs a clean drive signal to the horizontal output transistor stage that feeds the flyback transformer and deflection yoke. This “combination” design integrates the oscillator and sync-comparison logic that older TV chassis built from discrete transistors.
