BA3422 Dual Recording/Playback Preamplifier (Rohm)

The BA3422 (Rohm) is a dual recording/playback preamplifier IC designed for radio cassette recorders, handling the low-level signal processing needed for both recording onto and playing back from magnetic tape.

BA3422 – How It Works

It amplifies the very weak signal coming from a tape head during playback (applying the standard equalization curve needed to correctly reproduce the recorded audio), and during recording, conditions the input signal and drives the tape head with the correct bias and level for a clean recording — both functions combined in one dual-channel chip.

It works alongside a chip like the BA3423 also in this catalog in a complete cassette deck design — one handling the head preamplification, the other managing system-level switching between play/record and different tape mechanisms.
