SN74157 Quad 2-Input Multiplexer

The SN74157 is a quad 2-input multiplexer — it selects between two 4-bit data words (A or B) and routes the chosen one to four parallel outputs, based on a single shared select line.

74157 – How It Works

Unlike the 74153’s independent select-per-pair design, all four bits switch together based on one select line — a common way to choose between two entire 4-bit buses (e.g. two different data sources) with a single control signal.

It’s a classic building block in simple 4-bit ALU designs, where it selects between two operand sources before they reach the arithmetic/logic stage.
