The LM723 is a classic precision voltage regulator IC, a flexible building-block regulator that can be configured for a wide range of output voltages and currents using external components.

LM723 – How It Works

Unlike fixed-function regulators like the 78xx family also in this catalog, it exposes its internal reference, error amplifier, and pass-transistor base drive as separate pins, letting a designer build a custom regulator circuit (with external pass transistors for high current, current limiting, foldback protection, etc.) tailored to specific requirements.

Its flexibility made it a very popular choice in classic bench power supply and lab equipment designs before simpler fixed and adjustable three-terminal regulators like the LM350 also in this catalog became widespread.
