LM339N Quad Voltage Comparator

The LM339N is a very common quad (4-in-1) voltage comparator IC — each section compares two input voltages and outputs a digital high or low depending on which is larger.

LM339 – How It Works

Unlike an op-amp used for linear amplification, a comparator is designed to swing hard to one rail or the other based on which input is higher — making it the natural building block for threshold detection, like triggering an alarm when a sensor voltage crosses a set point.

Its open-collector outputs need an external pull-up resistor to work correctly — a common beginner mistake is forgetting this resistor and wondering why the output never reads a clean logic high.
