The TP4056 Lithium Charger Module is one of the most widely used small charging boards in DIY electronics, charging a single 3.7V lithium cell at up to 1A over a simple Micro USB input while a companion protection IC guards against overcharge and short circuits.

TP4056 Charger Module – How It Works

The TP4056 chip itself manages a standard constant-current, constant-voltage lithium charging profile, delivering up to 1A to the connected cell until it reaches 4.2V, then tapering the current down as the cell approaches full charge, with two onboard LEDs (usually red and blue) indicating charging-in-progress and charge-complete states so status is visible at a glance. Many versions of this module add a second protection IC alongside the bare TP4056 circuit, providing overcharge, over-discharge and short-circuit protection on the battery output side, which the base TP4056 chip alone does not include, making the “with protection” variant meaningfully safer for a raw, unprotected lithium cell than the charger-only version. Because it accepts a common Micro USB input, it charges from the same 5V phone chargers, power banks and USB ports already used for countless other small devices, with no dedicated charger required.
