DS1287 Real-Time Clock (Dallas Semiconductor)

The DS1287 (Dallas Semiconductor) is a real-time clock IC, a drop-in replacement for the IBM AT computer clock/calendar chip and pin-compatible with the MC146818A, counting time and date with a built-in battery backup.

DS1287 – How It Works

It contains a complete self-contained subsystem with lithium battery, quartz crystal, and support circuitry all in one 24-pin package, counting seconds through year with leap-year compensation in either binary or BCD format, plus a programmable square-wave output and three separately maskable interrupt sources (alarm, periodic, and update-ended), remaining accurate for over 10 years without external power.

A classic PC that loses its date/time settings every time it’s powered off is showing the textbook symptom of a dead internal lithium cell in a chip like this one — a very common vintage-computer repair.
