The 79L12 is a fixed -12V negative linear voltage regulator IC in a low-power TO-92 package, the negative-voltage counterpart to the positive 78Lxx regulator family also in this catalog.

79L12 – How It Works

It accepts an unregulated negative DC input voltage below -12V and outputs a stable, clean -12V rail, needed for circuits (such as op-amp dual-rail supplies) that require both a positive and a negative voltage supply relative to ground rather than a single-polarity supply.

It’s commonly paired with a positive regulator like the 78L15 also in this catalog to build a complete ±12V or ±15V split-supply for op-amp and other dual-rail analog circuits.
